How To Measure Your Health

Man leaping with joy

Are you as healthy as you could be?

Hiya,

There are many ways to measure your overall health and wellbeing but it’s not so easy to find definitive descriptions of what that means.

For instance the top 5  body health indicators seem to include:

  1. Your BMI score, a poor score could make you susceptible to type 2 diabetes
  2. Your biological age, an unhealthy lifestyle can leave your body thinking it’s a lot older than you actually are.
  3. Waist measurement, a waist measurement of less then 94 centimeters for men and 80 centimeters for women is regarded as healthy as our vital organs are housed in our waist area.
  4. Blood pressure, the Heart Foundation considers a normal blood pressure to be less than 120/80mmHg. More or less than this can leave you open to heart disease and strokes.
  5. Heart rate, 60-100 beats per minute is normal for the average person’s resting heart rate. Higher than that could mean your heart is working too hard which could lead to heart conditions or stroke.

Obviously, a good, balanced diet and regular exercise are important to keep our bodies fit and healthy.

But over and above your body health is your mental health. How relaxed you feel on a  day to day basis, how you deal with adverse circumstances, how you think of others as well as yourself can all lead to positive or negative mental states.

At the end of the day we all want to live longer, but usually only if we can remain healthy, active and reasonably stress free at the same time. If we are parents, we also want to set a great example to our kids so that they grow up to live healthy, happy lives too.

It won’t be long before I hit 50 so this is at the top of mind for me. I don’t feel at my peak level of health and fitness at the moment, I’m pretty good but not tip top – so I’m on a mission to change that. If I want to feel fitter and stronger even when I’m 60 or even 70 then I better start NOW.

How about You? Are you as fit and healthy as you should/could be?

Enjoy

Take the opportunity today to write a list of things that you are afraid of.

Hiya,

For some this will be a short list and others it will be longer than it should. I for one am afraid of dying before I achieve a lot more than I have right now for instance. But give it some real thought, take a bit of time over it and write down everything that comes to mind.

It may surprise you just how long or short it actually is.

It’s funny how identifying our fears can actually diminish them. Once your list is complete, read it a few times. Notice how you feel about each item. You may feel some are silly, others irrelevant.

This execise in itself may spur you on to tackle some of those fears, some of which you may only think you have. We define ourselves in many ways and one way is through our fears – I’m afraid of heights, or spiders, or flying, or open spaces etc. Thing is, you may have been afraid once but that doesn’t necessarily mean you still are.

Find out which it is today.

Take the opportunity today to write down 10 achievements you are happy with in your life.

Hiya,

Every now and then we all need reminding of just how far we’ve come. What we’ve achieved, where we’ve been, what we’ve done and who we’ve shared it all with.

If you’re one of those people that think that your life has been a waste up till now, do this exercise as soon as possible. No need to stop at 10 either. When you’ve finished, read the list aloud and be proud of who you are. Now consider what you still can do, be, have, experience etc.

There’s a whole lot of life out there – go get some!

As Thomas Edison once said:

“If we all did the things we were capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves.”

Take the opportunity today to think differently about something.

Hiya,

We can, on occasion, every now and again get attached to some of the
thoughts we have. You know the ones; my neighbour is really annoying
because… Or; people that read such and such a paper are… Or; those
people claiming benefits when they don’t even bother to find work and
look after themselves are…

Most of us have thoughts like that.

Now choose one of those thoughts, one that you know very well, and
just as an exercise imagine it’s wrong. Place yourself in a situation
where the truth about something is the opposite of that thought you
usually have. For example, your neighbour may be doing their best from
where they are and it’s You that chooses to become annoyed because of
your lack of understanding about their circumstances. Imagine you are
having an incredibly traumatic time at the moment, so much so that You
behave in a way similar to your neighbour and it’s your neighbour
thinking that You are annoying.

Think about that today – just as an exercise.

Enjoy
