How To Measure Your Health

Man leaping with joy

Are you as healthy as you could be?

Hiya,

There are many ways to measure your overall health and wellbeing but it’s not so easy to find definitive descriptions of what that means.

For instance the top 5  body health indicators seem to include:

  1. Your BMI score, a poor score could make you susceptible to type 2 diabetes
  2. Your biological age, an unhealthy lifestyle can leave your body thinking it’s a lot older than you actually are.
  3. Waist measurement, a waist measurement of less then 94 centimeters for men and 80 centimeters for women is regarded as healthy as our vital organs are housed in our waist area.
  4. Blood pressure, the Heart Foundation considers a normal blood pressure to be less than 120/80mmHg. More or less than this can leave you open to heart disease and strokes.
  5. Heart rate, 60-100 beats per minute is normal for the average person’s resting heart rate. Higher than that could mean your heart is working too hard which could lead to heart conditions or stroke.

Obviously, a good, balanced diet and regular exercise are important to keep our bodies fit and healthy.

But over and above your body health is your mental health. How relaxed you feel on a  day to day basis, how you deal with adverse circumstances, how you think of others as well as yourself can all lead to positive or negative mental states.

At the end of the day we all want to live longer, but usually only if we can remain healthy, active and reasonably stress free at the same time. If we are parents, we also want to set a great example to our kids so that they grow up to live healthy, happy lives too.

It won’t be long before I hit 50 so this is at the top of mind for me. I don’t feel at my peak level of health and fitness at the moment, I’m pretty good but not tip top – so I’m on a mission to change that. If I want to feel fitter and stronger even when I’m 60 or even 70 then I better start NOW.

How about You? Are you as fit and healthy as you should/could be?

Enjoy

Happiness = In the Flow

Hiya,

I’m reading a fascinating book at the moment by Mikael Krogerus and Roman Tschäppeler titled “The Decision Book“.

It contains 50 models for strategic thinking to help in making decisions.

One of the strategies is understanding how to identify being happy. They quote a study  conducted by US psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (yep, go on – say it out loud).

Mihaly interviewed over a thousand people about what made them happy and used their responses to determine the 5 most common indicators, which were:

  1. They were intensely focussed on an activity
  2. It was of their own choosing
  3. It was not under-challenging (boring) or over-challenging (overwhelming)
  4. It had a clear objective
  5. Which received immediate feedback

He coined the phrase ‘in the flow‘ to describe that mental state.

The participants that experienced this ‘flow‘ were said to have a profound sense of satisfaction and they lost track of time because they were totally absorbed.

Easy to imagine athletes, musicians, artists etc. reaching this place often but ask yourself when was the last time you experienced all 5 of the above?

If you want to be happier look for projects that will enable this state of mind – and if you employ people or manage people, figure out ways to engage them in tasks that create that outcome. They will be a lot happier and you will undoubtedly create a more productive, creative and content workplace.

Enjoy

Have You Got Less Working Years Ahead Or Behind You?

Fed up being stuck in traffic going to work

Fed up being stuck in traffic going to work?

Hiya,

Have You Got Less Working Years Ahead Or Behind You?

I read a blog post by Stephen Edwards recently and this line in it inspired the question above: “The truth is I have probably lived more days than I’m going to live.

Wow! That focuses the mind, right?

We’ve all heard of Peak Oil – it’s the point when we have burned more oil than is left in the ground, we’ve gone past the halfway mark – there’s less left than what we’ve used. Trouble is, we’re using it faster every day so it won’t last as long as we’ve been using it already.

This is much like life – it goes faster the more we live it. The older we get the quicker it goes! The big question is – what are you going to do with what’s left?

Nobody knows how much time they have, so let’s make each and every day a step towards who we really are and who we really want to be. Let’s show the world our unique selves, let’s offer the gift of ourselves to everyone.

If you’re a man of 38 or more, you’re probably halfway through your life – shocking right? The same if you’re a woman of 40 or more. I don’t say that to depress you but rather to spur you on to consider what you want the rest of your life to be like – work or otherwise.

And that is largely down to what you DO.

Every day is a new opportunity to change your mindset and change your life.

All you have to do is decide what to do with the time that’s been given you.” ~ Gandalf (Lord of the Rings)

The Power of Syntax in Creating Lasting Change

Hiya,

Syntax describes the structure of a language and how it is used to communicate.

The importance of Syntax when we communicate is absolute (whether we are talking to ourselves OR someone else).

I just wrote an article for the website SelfGrowth.com – one of the biggest self improvement sites on the web. In it I share:

  • How’ syntax can change the meaning of a sentence
  • Why’ this is important
  • And how to best create a positive message

Overcoming Your Fears…

Hiya,

I wrote a post on my other blog yesterday which features an excellent (short) video from Brendon Burchard talking about the three types of fear we feel when thinking about moving towards our goals.

Insightful, take a look here —-> READ MORE HERE

I encourage you to take 10 minutes to watch it if you do experience anxiety when making choices to follow your passions and interests – especially job related.

We get so hung up on security we actually limit our experience of life.

Take a look today – you’ll be glad you did.

Do You Hate This Too?

Street with litter everywhere

Litterbugs drive me mad!

Hiya,

OK, I can’t remember seeing a street as bad as the pic above, and yes – hate is a strong word!

Having said that, when I see people drop their rubbish on the floor or throw it out of car windows it demonstrates their ignorance and lack of responsibility.

I see young and old doing it, rich and poor and I really do believe that people this selfish can’t be happy. On that level I feel sorry for them – what sad lives they must lead if they have no respect for their environment or anybody else’s.

Out of sight out of mind, the saying goes and I wonder whether these people actually even see the mess they and others like them cause!

So, why am I writing about this here?

Because it’s this very attitude that keeps people stuck. Stuck in relationships they don’t like, in environments they don’t like and in in jobs they don’t like.

To these people it’s always someone else’s fault that they live the lives they live. They take no responsibility for changing themselves in order to change their circumstances. These are people I can’t work with.

There’s an old joke that goes: “How many psychologists does it take to change a lightbulb? Answer: Just one, but the lightbulb has to ‘want‘ to change.” Funny but also rooted in truth. Unless we actually decide that it’s us that have to change to change our situation, then we’ll never lead the lives we desire.

Taking more responsibility = taking more control.

Rant over.

Overcoming Life’s Battles

James Arthur Ray blog discussion

My comment, his reply

Stuart Young, London, UK

Hiya,

I was chatting with James Arthur Ray, of hit movie ‘The Secret‘ fame the other day. When I say chatting – I mean I commented on his blog post and he replied. 🙂

I’ve been reading his latest ‘Do You Love Life or Fantasy‘ series and I recommend you take a look CLICK HERE

If you’re not familiar with James then Google him, but believe me when I say he’s been through the biggest battle of his life recently.

How we ‘think‘ at difficult times is THE KEY to moving through the experience, and coming out the other side more swiftly and with hope for a brighter future.

His posts led me to formulate a process called The 3 ‘A’s:-

  1. Accept – What is, not more or less, just What IS. How we’re feeling is valid. Accept that.
  2. Acknowledge – How it got that way – honestly. IE: Take responsibility for whatever part you may have played, and you almost invariably have.
  3. Ask – Question what all of that means, and ask how you move forwards.

James has his own variation where he adds another two ‘A’s – Act and Adjust.

If you’ve been through a battle recently, or are in the midst of one now – consider these today. And please take a look at James’ blog posts, they’re insightful.

Enjoy

What If You Could?

Man leaping with joy

What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail?

Stuart Young, London, UK

Hiya,

What if you could … what?

What if you could meet the partner of your dreams? What if you could be as fit as a top athlete? What if you could achieve all of your goals systematically. What if you could have the job you love doing?

We spend so much of our time thinking that we can’t, we forget to consider if we could.

What’s the point you might be asking.

Apart from the fact that thinking about achieving something that would make us feel great actually starts to make us feel great – the very act of thinking in that way actually makes us consider opportunities and options that we are blind to when we’re busy thinking we can’t.

Think about it – if I ask you to think of three reasons why you’ll never win the lottery, it’s impossible for you to come up with ways that you could win.

If I said look around where you are right now and find ALL the red things, you wouldn’t notice all the blue things because that’s not where you are putting your focus. You’d miss all the blue things.

Likewise with continually thinking you can’t – you miss those opportunities in front of you that may just prove that you can.

Try that today – just allow yourself to daydream about all the things you’d like in your life and, just for the purposes of dreaming, imagine that you can have those things. Ask yourself: What if I could…?

See what happens.

Enjoy

Stu
