What are you ‘actually’ afraid of?

This is October 20th of my book:  ‘How To Change Your Life One Day At ATime‘.

Take the opportunity today to write a list of things that you are afraid of.

For some this will be a short list and others it will be longer than it should. I for one am afraid of dying before I achieve a lot more than I have right now for instance. But give it some real thought, take a bit of time over it and write down everything that comes to mind.

It may surprise you just how long or short it actually is.

It’s funny how identifying our fears can actually diminish them. Once your list is complete, read it a few times. Notice how you feel about each item. You may feel some are silly, others irrelevant.

This execise in itself may spur you on to tackle some of those fears, some of which you may only think you have. We define ourselves in many ways and one way is through our fears – I’m afraid of heights, or spiders, or flying, or open spaces etc. Thing is, you may have been afraid once but that doesn’t necessarily mean you still are.

It’s a good idea to explore even deeper with some of them and ask “Why am I afraid of [xyz]?”

As always… enjoy

How the way you ask yourself questions makes a BIG difference.

This is October 9th of my book:  ‘How To Change Your Life One Day At ATime‘.

Take the opportunity today to ask yourself a positive question.

Burt Goldman suggests this process as a way of staying positive. If for instance you were to ask yourself: ‘Why don’t I quit smoking?’ that would be negative. Your mind will actually go off and try and answer the question and it will find reasons, such as: ‘Because I like it.’ or ‘Because it relaxes me.’ This then convinces you to continue.

If however, you rephrase the question: ‘What would my life be like if I quit smoking?’ then your mind will find answers to that request, such as: ‘I’d feel better in the morning.’ or ‘This damn cough would go away.’ or ‘I could play with the kids without getting wheezy after two minutes.’ etc.

Next time you’re asking yourself something, try this process and see how different you feel.

Enjoy

Want to reduce that pain? Try this…

This is October 8th of my book:  ‘How To Change Your Life One Day At ATime‘.

Take the opportunity today to notice any aches or pains – then let them go.

This is not some magic trick although I will give you an exercise you can do to actually reduce your aches and pains.

No, this is about letting go of the suffering of pain. Pain is a part of life but suffering is optional – Anthony Robbins said that and I agree with him 100%. When you experience physical pain it is your body trying to communicate where you need to take care. So listen, but don’t become a slave to it.

OK, so you can’t pick up stuff the way you used to, find another way or pick up less. OK so that broken bone is throbbing like a SOB, of course it is – it’s mending.

Stop moaning and groaning about the aches and pains you have, they’re valid I know, but it’s not helping you. Let them go. Say: ‘OK, it hurts, I’ll work around it till it doesn’t.’ Beat that pain into submission.

So, on to the trick…

If you have some binoculars or can borrow some, look at that part of your body that is aching or in pain using the wrong end – so things look smaller. If it’s your finger just hold it out in front of you and using the wrong end of the binoculars look at it. It’ll seem farther away and your brain actually connects the image with the feeling and the pain reduces. You may need to use a mirror if it’s your shoulder or head etc. Try it and see. I love it when neuroscience finds out stuff like this.

How do you feel when you can’t change things?

This is October 7th of my book:  ‘How To Change Your Life One Day At ATime‘.

Take the opportunity today to accept.

Accept what?

Well, everything! Accept that you woke up late and will now get a lecture from your boss. Accept that the economy is making it harder to make ends meet. Accept that your team aren’t going to win the league, or competition, or game. Accept that you might have to learn new skills in order for you to reach your goals. Accept that the person you’re crazy about pays you no attention. Accept that your childhood wasn’t as great as some people you know. Accept that you weren’t born with a silver spoon in your mouth. Accept that you were born with a silver spoon in your mouth. Accept that you may not be able to run the fastest, jump the highest, throw the furthest.

Accepting doesn’t mean you can’t change things. It means sometimes things won’t change and you have to be ok with that. When something is unchangeable and you don’t accept it, it’ll eat away at you until there’s nothing left.

When you get to a place of acceptance you will feel a whole lot more relaxed. A whole lot less frustrated, angry or helpless. You will feel a huge weight lift off your shoulders. So look at your circumstances today and consider what you can accept.

Life can either be accepted or changed. If it is not accepted, it must be changed. If it cannot be changed, then it must be accepted. – Unknown

Do you take yourself too seriously?

This is October 6th of my book:  ‘How To Change Your Life One Day At ATime‘.

Take the opportunity today to entertain some kids by being daft.

Is there anything more fun than goofing around with some kids. As we grow older we run the risk of forgetting how enjoyable it is to just run around making a lot of noise and being daft.

Watch some kids playing, you won’t find them feeling self conscious – that’s the disease of the grown up.

A word of warning; if the kids you’re thinking of being daft with aren’t your own – as the sergeant used to say in Hill Street Blues: “Let’s be careful out there.

It goes without saying, but make sure you know them and make sure they’re happy for you to join in. You don’t want to freak them out! (Or their parents.)

So, what have you done with your life so far?

This is October 2nd of my book:  ‘How To Change Your Life One Day At ATime‘.

Take the opportunity today to write down 10 achievements you’re happy with in your life.

Every now and then we all need reminding of just how far we’ve come. What we’ve achieved, where we’ve been, what we’ve done and who we’ve shared it all with.

If you’re one of those people that think that your life has been a waste up till now, do this exercise as soon as possible. No need to stop at 10 either. When you’ve finished, read the list aloud and be proud of who you are.

Now consider what you still can do, be, have, experience etc.

There’s a whole lot of life out there – go get some! 🙂

If we all did the things we were capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves. ” ~ Thomas Edison

How tired do you feel on a daily basis?

This is October 2nd of my book:  ‘How To Change Your Life One Day At ATime‘.

Take the opportunity today to take a nap if you need it.

There is a lot of scientific evidence to support the notion that napping is actually a highly beneficial pursuit.

The important aspect of napping is to get the timing right. The most important part of any sleep period is dreaming. If you don’t get a chance to dream you will not feel any benefit from the sleep. So your goal with napping is to get into REM state (Rapid Eye Movement ie: Dreaming) as quickly as possible. Then, wake up as soon as possible once it has passed. If you allow yourself to go into deeper sleep you will find it very hard to wake and will feel groggy and tired.

So how do you do that?

Thankfully tests have shown that most people will need between 15 and 30 minutes of sleep to experience REM, so start with that. You’ll have to experiment with an alarm clock to find your optimum time but once you find it you’ll find you can wake feeling refreshed and alert.

Lastly for anyone who thinks napping is for kids, the elderly and sherkers – here’s a handful of famous nappers: Richard Branson, Bill Clinton, Winston Churchill and Leonardo da Vinci – so you’ll be in good company.

Do you know what your preferred energy level is?

This is October 2nd of my book:  ‘How To Change Your Life One Day At ATime‘.

Take the opportunity today to notice where you might be self-sabotaging.

Following on from yesterday’s guide I thought I’d share another one of David & Kristin Morelli’s techniques, this time it’s about self-sabotage and how we can spot it.

The crux of it is the idea that we all have a preferred energy level. Whether you are feeling a bit low so you seek out some excitement or on a high so seek out an argument, both are utilised to reset our energy level back to the preferred setting.

Have you ever been on a real high after getting a raise from your boss or getting a date with a hot person or maybe you just had a great time with some friends, then you find yourself getting in to some silly row over something with a loved one? If that rings a bell give some thought to what your button is. What’s your trigger? Fear? Anxiety? Guilt?

Look and you’ll find it, then next time you can anticipate it ahead of time and maybe even nip it in the bud.

Enjoy

The most useful and powerful meditation I have ever done…

This is October 1st of my book:  ‘How To Change Your Life One Day At ATime‘.

Take the opportunity today to try the Inner Chamber technique.

David & Kristin Morelli, creators of one of the top 5 iTunes podcasts – ‘Energy Is Everything’ are big believers in the use of intuition. In order to tap into your intuition on a regular basis they came up with a formula – they call it the Inner Chamber Technique.

There’s a few simple things to remember before you start which are: you have to be sincere, be willing to listen, be open, have no expectations and have a clear question or intention ready.

Here’s a summary of the technique:

Think of a question you would like to investigate. Craft it well. Start by sitting in a quiet place and relax for a few minutes. Take a few deep breaths and bring your awareness completely to where you are.

Then imagine you slip wonderfully down a tube-slide and you end up at a door. Notice how the door looks, every detail. Open the door and enter the chamber, look around and notice how it looks and how you feel inside – this is your private place.

Go to the centre of the chamber and then when you feel relaxed and ready, ask your question. Listen. Take a mental note of the answers that come. Take those answers a bit deeper if necessary by asking ‘What does that mean?

When you’re ready, take a few more deep breaths and allow yourself to come back to where you are right now. Now let the answers simmer. Make some notes about those answers.

Finally, when you understand the answers you received – take some action.

It may take you a few times to really start getting some useful information but keep trying. When it happens you will feel exhilarated!
