Why most people don’t achieve their dreams

Hiya,

It’s a psychological given that our fear of loss is greater than our fear of gain. This makes perfect sense from a survival standpoint, the loss of our life was more fearful than the gain of a good meal, or shelter or even a mate. Our amygdala’s job is to keep us alive and it’s influence on our behaviour is as strong as it ever was – even though it is buried deep in our subconscious these days.

So how does that impact on our dreams, goals and ambitions?

Remember back to a time when you attained a goal, it may have been passing your driving test or getting a job you wanted – it felt great didn’t it? Now remember back to a time when you didn’t achieve your goal, maybe the object of your affection rebuffed your advances, maybe you failed your driving test or didn’t get that job you wanted – how did that feel? Pretty bad eh?

As this happens more and more during our early lives we begin to learn that striving for certain things, especially if they seem out of reach, often causes pain. Pain = possible death (from our amygdala’s perspective). So naturally, we tend to avoid it. We create a dream, it seems wonderful. We imagine our life once that dream has been realised and we can tangibly feel the joy, relief, ecstasy. If we decide to take action to attain that life we now create a situation where we will either succeed or fail. If we fail, the illusion will be shattered, we will not have that life after all and we will lose our goal.

This fear of loss sabotages us from even starting. ‘Keep the dream’ our subconscious says, like delaying checking your lottery ticket. Until you check it you may have won – once you check it you know you’ve lost! So you keep the dream – it feels good. ‘One day…’ you say to your friends, ‘I’m going to…[XYZ]’. But for most people they are just words.

So how do you get past this fear of shattering your own illusion? How do you take action towards your goals, ambitions and dreams?

By changing your Mindset. By accepting failure as part of the learning experience. By accepting that failure does not mean an end to the dream, it is simply an obstacle to get around. By switching your fear of loss to that of what you will lose by not striving for your dreams. By understanding the Thoughts=Feelings=Actions process and using it to your advantage.

Thanks to all the reviewers!

Thanks so much to all those that found the time to write a review of my book on Amazon over the last couple of days.

28 were done on Sunday alone and I’m sure that created a healthy spike in their algorithms which in turn will help push my book up the recommend list.

Here is a link to the comments for anyone wishing to read them: Click Here

but I have posted a selection here, I’m sure you’ll find them as fascinating and varied as I did…

This book completely changed my outlook on life. I went from being a half glass empty to a glass half full person in only three months! I would recommend this book to everyone.” ~ pollyr

Whether you feel totally disillusioned with the way your life has unfolded and want a complete change, or there are a few small tweaks which would make a small difference, this book is the one you need if you really want to change your life. Taken as a whole, (I am nowhere near finished) it is enormously powerful, but is cleverly delivered in managable daily suggestions to break down the process and make it a whole lot easier. The most important thing this book has done for me is to help me identify the changes that I really want to make, and for that I am very grateful. This book does exactly what it says on the tin, if you use it and don’t just leave it gathering dust on the shelf along with your life!” ~ N. Torbett

When I first got this book, I couldn’t put it down ! It’s easy to read yet thought provoking and is written as the title suggests “One Day at a Time”. It also has some interesting and inspiring stories to tell too. Sometimes it’s often the smallest/simplest things you do in life that can make a big difference and this book helps you to think differently and improve your life, day by day. I definitely recommend you buy this book and see for yourself !” ~ Kerry

I managed to use the advice on one of the days to help me make the decision that changed my career!
I already changed my job to working with a training company but my ideal job was to teach english in secondary school.
i got an opportunity to have an interview for unqualified teacher and train for my qualification whilst there.
The issue was it is 100miles from my home, and i made the decision to leave a job i enjoy to start my career in teaching and most importantly leaving my boyfriend for a year also.
This book gave me the advice and guidance to pursue my career and my love for teaching….. and i got the job :)!” ~ Lianne

This book was a recommendation from a friend, without which I may not have purchased it based upon the title. I’ve been reasonably successful in both my professional and personal endeavors; so wasn’t particularly looking to change my life.
How wrong I was.
Whether you are looking for a significant life change or gradual self improvement, this book has both the simple insights and thought provoking ideas to stimulate the catalyst for continual growth that lies dormant within all of us.
An unexpectedly, pleasant and easy going read. Whether taking it a day at a time or jumping ahead (which I couldn’t stop myself from doing); the author provides not only insights, but also tools that can be applied and case studies for those already achieved.
I normally pass any self improvement books to my friends having read them, not with this one.
Within these pages are insights both previously learnt (and some forgotten) and new ideas I will wish to return to. To recognize the changes I’ve since made.
So I recommend this book and will kindly, politely ask my friends to buy their own.” ~ David

Once again, thanks everyone for your continued support

Enjoy

Amazon Review Reminder

Hiya,

Today is book review day for ‘How To Change Your Life One Day At A Time‘.

As mentioned the other day, if you are now reading the book please help me push it up Amazon’s recommend list by doing a short review (only takes 2 mins) by going here.

In order for the algorithms to notice them they must happen within a 24 hour period, ie: TODAY!

There are already some reviews there so please take a look to see what others have written if you’re not sure what to write. Above all – be honest! I’m not looking for bogus reviews, only those that recount authentic experiences. 🙂

Here’s a pic of where to find the review link on the page as it’s quite small, once there you’ll see a button saying ‘Create Your Own review’:

Can I ask a favour?

Hiya,

Many of you are now readers of my book: ‘How To Change Your Life One Day At A Time‘ and the next step in getting the book ‘out there‘ is to get reviews on Amazon.

Hopefully you’ve started to experience some of the guides – possibly with positive changes occurring. (I’ve already had some feedback from readers of incredible coincidences happening, which I’ll share another day!)

So, on to the favour… Amazon only recognises bulk reviews within a 24 hour period, which means I need to get as many as possible on ONE day. I’m choosing this Sunday 24th June as the review day.

Here’s what I need you to do:

#1 Go to Amazon sometime during SUNDAY where the book is on sale here, there you’ll see an option to write a review (see image below as it’s easy to miss)

#2 Follow the instructions and leave a short review, maybe explaining a coincidence of your own, or a change that happened, or an experience you had due to following one of the guides. It only takes a couple of minutes and may boost the book up the Amazon recommendation list.

Arrow points to the link to review

For those of you that were waiting for it to be available on Kindle, you’ll see it is now an option – at ONLY £2.66!!!

Thank you so much – I really appreciate it. I’m in the throws of persuing many routes to get the book widely distributed and you are certainly helping me on a grass roots level.

We are at the start of what could be a fantastic journey and I can’t thank you enough for your support.

cheers

Stu

Is it really all in the mind?

Hiya,

I was listening to Roger Bannister on the radio the other day. For anyone that doesn’t know him – he was the first person to break the 4 minute mile! In History!

Doctors, scientists, coaches and other runners of the time said it couldn’t be done, that it was humanly impossible to run that fast for that long. They were all wrong.

What I didn’t know about him was he wanted more than anything else to be a doctor, specifically a neurologist. He wanted to understand the mind.

After his running career he had a long career in this area and subsequently claimed that:

Champions aren’t made in the gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them – a desire, a dream, a vision.

And he never thought of himself as anything special, stating:

I came from such a simple origin, without any great privilege, and I would say I also wanted to make a mark.

So the most important aspect of any achievement is a person’s Mindset. And like training your body for a race training your Mindset takes commitment and work.

Are you prepared to do that to achieve your dream?

Hiya,

Today I just wanted to review my daughter’s beautiful photography book because I know a lot of you love photography.

Every picture is taken with an iPhone and then manipulated with the various filters available through that.

Many are of everyday objects or scenes of beauty, but many are purely abstract (they’re the ones I love the best).

Please go here to take a look at the Preview option – you’ll be glad you did, some of the images are stunning. To find out more about Hannah’s work you can visit her flikr page: here

Understand what you REALLY want!

Hiya,

Yesterday I asked: if you knew that what you wanted was what you really wanted, to read that go here. Make sure you’ve done that before doing this part.

Today I’m going to share one of Tony Robbins core principles: The 6 Human Needs.

He proposes that we all have 6 basic needs which include:

#1 Certainty (or security)

#2 Uncertainty (or variety)

#3 Significance

#4 Love and Connection

#5 Growth (spiritually, or in our soul or being)

#6 Contribution (to the wider world)

We prioritise them differently from person to person, but we each have all of them to one degree or another.

So, decide right now on a level of 1 – 10 (1 being hardly at all, 10 being totally full) how does your life measure up right now . Go through all 6 and mark on a pad where you are with each. Anything below a 5 by the way means you are pretty dissatisfied with that area of your life – that need of yours is NOT being met.

THEN, go to your Perfect Day and go through the same process.

In your Perfect Day how Certain are you about where you are in your life? 1 – 10

In your Perfect Day how much Uncertainty/Variety is there in your life? 1 – 10

In your Perfect Day how Significant do you feel? 1 – 10

In your Perfect Day how much Love & Connection do you feel? 1 – 10

In your Perfect Day how much Growth is taking place in your life? 1 – 10

In your Perfect Day how much are you Contributing to others? 1 – 10

Mark these scores on your pad. Notice if you are still lower on some than you’d like to be. Are they all at 9s and 10s? If not, why not? What’s missing? Maybe something isn’t really how you want it to be.

If Yes – then that is what you really want, now go for it!

This technique can be applied to any and every area of your life and brings real clarity very quickly.

Try it and see.

Enjoy
